• STOP Changing the clocks!

Changing our clocks twice a year isn’t just annoying,

    it has deadly consequences.

Sign the petition telling Congress to VOTE YES on the Sunshine Protection Act, H.R. 139 and S. 29, which would make Daylight Savings Time our permanent time.

    • 24% increase in Heart Attacks: Heart attacks were up 24% the Monday after the spring shift (according to a study across hospital admissions in Michigan). This is attributed to disrupted sleep and circadian misalignment.

    • 26% increase in Traffic Accidents: Traffic accidents increase by almost 26% (according to a Colorado State Patrol study), with a 6% increase in fatal traffic accidents (according to another 2020 study) during the week following the springtime shift, driven by sleep deprivation and reduced driver alertness.

    • 8% increase in Strokes: The rate of ischemic stroke can be up to 8% higher during the first two days after the spring transition (according to a study in Finland).

    Dear Sir or Madam,

    STOP Changing the Clocks!

VOTE YES on H.R. 139 and S. 29: The Sunshine Protection Act

When President Woodrow Wilson passed the Standard Time Act in 1918, implementing Daylight Savings Time for the first time in U.S. history, Americans and farmers in particular revolted. A cow, after all, gives milk based on the cycle of the sun, not the hands of an incorrect clock. The measure was repealed within months.

President Franklin Delano Roosevelt implemented the clock changes again in 1942 as a wartime energy-saving measure. But as soon as the war ended in 1945, he stopped the needless time changes.

In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson brought back the twice-yearly clock changes, and Americans have been suffering the effects ever since.

Studies show these twice-annual clock changes have serious and detrimental effects on human health, including:

    • 24% increase in Heart Attacks. This is attributed to disrupted sleep and circadian misalignment.
    • An almost 26% increase in Traffic Accidents & a 6% increase in fatal traffic accidents driven by sleep deprivation and reduced driver alertness.
    • 8% increase in Strokes due to disrupted sleep and circadian misalignment.

There is no justifiable reason to keep changing our clocks twice a year. And the health effects mentioned above show these clock changes are detrimental to American’s health and well-being.

The Sunshine Protection Act is one of those increasingly rare bipartisan policies on which everyone can agree. Please VOTE YES on H.R. 139 and S. 29.

    Sincerely,

    A concerned American
